19th Century Dental Pelican
In a fitted leather case, with all nine interchangeable jaws. Label inside of lid reads in part: "Inst'te de Chirurgie [Institute of Surgery], L. Mathieu." Circa 1860. With paper insert. 10.25" x 4.25".
Dental pelicans are so-called because they supposedly resemble the shape of a pelican’s beak. They are believed to date back to the 1300s and are among the very earliest instruments designed to remove teeth.
