A Japanese Zelkova Wood Shrine
Zushi

Edo Period 18th/19th century
Of architectural form, constructed in richly patinated zelkova (keyaki) wood. The shrine with two hinged door opening to reveal a gilded interior housing a figure of Kannon Bosatsu, the Bodhisattva of Compassion. The exterior with black lacquer details and fine copper mounts. The roof with sweeping eaves in the irimoya style. The doors, when closed, secured by a metal latch. The interior lined with gold leaf.
Dimensions: 15 1/2 in. (40 cm )

Note: In Japan, a zushi is a miniature temple, a house for a god. To open its doors is a private act of devotion. This shrine, with the weight of zelkova and the quiet of gold, was once the silent heart of a room. It holds no dogma, only mercy.

Condition: Expected age cracks, lacquer wear, and gilding loss. One copper mount re-affixed. A beautiful, honest patina.
