The central image is of Francoise d'Aubigne, Marquise de Maintenon on horseback wearing a Fontange headdress with tiers of lace ruffles, an accessory popular at Court in the late 17th century.
Adam-Francois Van der Meulen and Jean Baptiste Martin were particularly known for scenes of military campaigns and conquests.
Both worked in the service Louis XIV of France for whom they recorded in large scale paintings his victories. Both accompanied the king on military campaigns, against Spain, Germany and the Netherlands. These battle scenes had an important influence on the development of the genre military painting in France.
The offered lot presents Louis XIV's victory after the Siege of Dinant, with troops and civilians at ease, Dinant Citadel in the distance.
