Chinese Large Polychrome Carved Seated Guardian Figure
Late Qing dynasty, 19th Century.
A large Chinese carved and polychrome-painted wooden figure of a seated guardian or warrior deity Guangdi, depicted wearing an elaborate headdress and layered armor with raised shoulder guards. The figure is modeled with a stern expression, prominent facial features, and hands resting upon the knees. Traces of red. green and gilt decoration remain throughout. The reverse is hollowed, consistent with traditional construction for large temple or devotional sculpture.
Height: approximately 41 inches (104 cm).

Condition: Extensive age related wear, loses to the polychrome and surface, cracks, abrasions, old repairs and areas of exposed wood and gesso. The reverse shows substantial surface loss and wear.
