Chinese White Jade Chrysanthemum Plaque
Qing dynasty
Of rectangular form with rounded corners, one side carved in low relief with a cluster of chrysanthemum blooms and foliage, the reverse left plain. The stone of an even white tone with subtle cloud-like inclusions, well polished to a soft, oily luster.
4 1/4 in. (10.8 cm) long

Note: Chrysanthemum, one of the 'Four Gentlemen' in Chinese culture, symbolizes longevity, nobility, and endurance. Jade plaques such as this were scholar's objects, held in the hand for contemplation or used as paperweights. The tactile pleasure of the stone was as important as its visual beauty.
