Flory studied at the Meinzinger Art School in Detroit. His studies were interrupted by World War II, during which he saw action in New Guinea.
After his recovery from war wounds, he went on to further study at the Art Students League and the Hans Hoffmann School of Art (New York City), the Academie Grand Chaumiere (Paris), the Institute D'Arte (Florence), and the Brooklyn Museum of Art School.

His paintings have been shown in museums throughout the country--the National Gallery, the Modern Museum of Art, the Chicago Art Institute, the Detroit Art Institute, the Columbus Gallery of Art, the Pennsylvania Academy, the Birmingham Art Museum.
