Gile Steele is known as a Hollywood Costume Designer, Many of his Costume sketches have been sold at auction, very few of his paintings.
The offered lot, painted when he was 20 years old depicts a moody image of LA's Chinatown.

He designed for the Norma Shearer film Marie Antoinette, Pride and Prejudice, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (both 1941), Mrs. Miniver (1942) and Madame Curie (1943). He won the Oscar for The Heiress in 1949 and Samson and Delilah in 1950. He died abruptly in 1952 at the age of 44.
