Oil on canvas, signed with the artist's initials and dated 'HS 1960' (lower right); titled '#1' and signed and dated 'Hassel Smith 1960' on canvas verso, in good condition, framed.
Provenance: Maxwell Galleries, San Francisco (gallery label on reverse); Andre Emmerich Gallery, New York (gallery label on reverse); Probably acquired from the above by the present owner.

Lot notes: The Hassel Smith Estate will include the painting in their updated inventory. It was previously listed as missing.

When Hassel Smith created this painting, he had been living in Northern California for decades and developed an abstract expressionist style of painting that aligned with the work of his fellow painter friends David Park, Elmer Bischoff, Clyfford Still, Richard Diebenkorn, Frank Lobdell and John Altoon in Los Angeles. He taught at several art institutions and became a seminal influence on other artists on the West Coast. The renownd San Francisco Chronicle art critic, Allen Temko, referred to Hassel Smith’s work during the 1950s and 60s as his “Thunderbolt period”.
