Japanese Mixed Metal Theater Scene Plaque
Meiji Period.
The rectangular plaque cast and inlaid in gold, silver, copper and shakudo with a lively theatrical scene. The upper register depicts an actor in elaborate costume performing on a balcony beneath a tiled roof with hanging lanterns. The lower register shows four figures in animated poses before a draped curtain, possibly a street performance or festival scene. The reverse cast in low relief with a landscape of pine trees and rocky outcrops.
10 1/4 in. (26.5 cm) long

Note: This plaque exemplifies the technical virtuosity of Meiji period metalwork, when Japanese artisans combined multiple alloys and patination techniques to create painterly, three-dimensional scenes. Such plaques were made for the Western export market and were often mounted as decorative panels or used as desk ornaments. The theatrical subject matter, known as shibai, was a popular theme reflecting the cultural life of Edo-period Japan.
