' Japonisme' the French interpretation of Japanese aesthetics in the Late 19th century originated with the displays at International Exhibitions. It wasn’t just the colors, shapes and crafts of Japan that Paris had become entranced by, but the Japanese idea that objects — vases, dishware, vanity boxes and other items theretofore considered strictly utilitarian — were themselves art.
