Pastel and pencil on paper, signed in pencil 'Joan Mitchell' (lower right); this work is in good condition overall, there is evidence of minor handling to the edges, the sheet is hinged and affixed to a stiff board, not framed.

Provenance: Property of a French Lady.
Joan Mitchell is best known as one of the major New York School artists in the 1950s, and associated with the American Abstract Expressionist movement. She developed an emotional style with her gestural brushwork seen in her paintings, drawings and prints from her New York days through her many years of living in France up to her death in 1992. This pastel drawing is typical of her style with its lush, densely tangled lines, and brilliant colors.
