Tavernier born in Paris, settled in San Francisco in 1870' and became the city's most popular 'Bohemian' upon co-founding the Bohemian Club shortly after his arrival, His painting of a traditional ceremony of the Pomo Nation is with the Met in New York. In January 1885, while visiting Hawaii he witnessed the eruption of Kilauea.. From this encounter was born the Volcano School, a regional movement exclusive to Hawaii.
