Kashmiri shawls, originally imported to England by the East India Company became a popular fashion accessory when Queen Victoria purchased eleven to wear over her crinoline skirts.
The popularity encouraged the textile industry of Paisley, Scotland to copy the scrolling design that eventually became known as Paisley.
The design became popular again in the 1960's Carnaby street designs of Mary Quant and the 1990's punk fashions of Vivienne Westwood.
