Mario Yrissary studied at Cooper Union and Queens College, but it was while working as a restaurant dishwasher that he got the idea to use the perforated rubber mats coating the kitchen floor as stencils to produce abstract patterns that were at once predictable and full of subtle nuances. His paintings, which have been linked to the Pattern and Decoration movement, are characterized by both sharp and hazy contours
