Pair of Chinese Cloisonne Enamel and Gilt Bronze Qilin Beast Censers.
Late Qing Dynasty to early 20th Century.
Each finely cast as a mythical qilin, powerfully modeled standing foursquare on a rectangular plinth. The gilt-bronze heads with finely incised manes and fierce expressions, the detachable heads forming the covers, the mouths open to emit smoke. The bodies and rectangular stands richly decorated in cloisonne enamel with stylized lotus scrolls, composite floral motifs, and scaly dragon-like patterns on a turquoise-blue ground. The sides of the stands with four shou characters for longevity amidst scrolling tendrils. The base of each stand centered with a gilt-bronze square panel bearing a four-character reign mark in seal script: Qianlong nian zhi (Made in the Qianlong reign).
Dimensions: Height Approx.15 1/2 in. (40 cm), long, 11 1/2 in. (30 cm). Weight over 40 pounds.
Condition Report:The gilt-bronze elements with natural wear to gilding and patination, consistent with age. Minor losses and bruises to the enamel, typical of handling. Verdigris to the interior of the censers.
