Pair of Louis XIII Style Sculptures of Hounds
Of cast stone, one hound playfully crouching down, the second hound sitting back to scratch an ear.
28in. x 42in, the second 30in.x 34in.
(72cm. x 107cm) and (76cm. x 66cm)

Condition: Both with weathered surfaces.

After the sculpted hounds on the balustrade of Chateau de Raray, located in the Pays de Valois, north of Paris.
Chateau de Raray was built in the Renaissance style in the early 1600's by Nicolas de Laney, a close advisor to Louis XIII. The balustrade surrounding the court yard was surmounted by carved hounds, some harrowing a stag, others , as in our offered lot, playful.
Hunting after the hounds was a principal amusement of courtiers.
