Portrait of Henrietta Maria of France, Queen of England, Ireland and Scotland

Henrietta Maria and Charles I of England were great connoisseurs and patrons of the Arts, including of Van Dyck and Rubens. Van Dyck was commissioned to paint many portraits of the Queen, as gifts for royalty and ambassadors.

Henrietta Maria, as a patron established an Art School that Van Dyck supervised. Art students were encouraged to copy his work, that is probably the origin of this portrait, as it bears resemblances to Van Dyck's work, but lacks the luminescence and skill.

HISTORY: According to documents accompanying the painting it was sold by Duveen Gallery, London,1906 as an original Van Dyck to Eva Cromwell Stotesbury of Palm Beach, Florida.

There is a photo of the portrait hanging in the dining room of "El Mirasol' the Stotesbury's home.
Subsequently the Estate of Eva Stotesbury was auctioned by Freeman's Auction House, Philadelphia in 1946.

The portrait was sold to a collector in Houston, and thence to our consignor.

THE MANCINI PEARLS: In this and many portraits she is depicted wearing a pair of diamond and pearl earrings. They were presented to her by her parents, King Henri IV of France and Maria de Medicis in 1625 to celebrate her marriage to Charles I. Not until she was an impoverished widow living in exile, did she part with them, selling them to her nephew Louis XIV, King of France. It was shortly thereafter that the exquisite pearls received their namesake, when Louis XIV presented them to Maria Mancini (1640-1715), hoping to win her favor.

From the estate of a Marin County collector.
