New York: Gabriel Wells, [1922-1923].

Definitive Edition. Complete in 37 volumes.

Number 36 of 1024 signed sets with leaf signed by Twain both as “Mark Twain”
and as “S L Clemens” and signed by his biographer Albert Bigelow Paine on
facing leaf in volume 1. In addition this set has an important Autographed Letter
Signed, Hartford, January 11,1889, signed “S L Clemens” 1 page recto only,
tipped in from Twain to his UK publisher, legendary bookman Andrew Chatto who
founded Chatto & Windus. Twain asks Chatto to pick up a publication for him
from the parapsychology organization the Society for Psychical Research noting
he’ll need to forward them this letter as they do not allow non members to buy
their publications.
According to the prospectus only the first 100 sets, of which
this is one, were set aside for fine binding. 8vo. Half indigo morocco over navy
buckram covered boards, gilt spine titles and decorations in compartments.

Condition: Rear cover of volume 1 detached but present, rubbing to joints and corner tips but

Twain signed these leaves in 1906 in anticipation of
a future definitive edition of his work which this posthumous edition represents.
