A Fine Japanese Parquetry Shodana Cabinet
Meiji Period, Late 19th Century.
Fine shoran scholar's cabinet is constructed in the yosegi-zaiku parquetry technique, employing multiple types of Japanese woods to form intricate geometric patterns. The drawers and doors are decorated with auspicious motifs including asanoha hemp leaf and mango fretwork, all symbolizing longevity and blessings. The cabinet is fitted with engraved bronze brass hardware and mounted with three hand painted Satsuma porcelain plaques depicting bijin beauties in interior and outdoor scenes, rendered in gilt and polychrome enamels. The upper section features black lacquer panels with gold decoration of birds and autumn grasses.
Height: approx. 27 in. (68.5 cm), Width: approx. 24 1/2 in (62 cm). Depth: approx. 11 in. (24.5 cm).

Condition: in good condition commensurate with age and use. Expected surface wear to lacquer, minor losses, oxidation to metal mounts.
